Last week, EduBiota was represented at the SciCom 26 Congress, which took place in the beautiful city of Évora, in a setting marked by historical heritage, an academic atmosphere and its magnificent colleges.
EduBiota’s participation focused on the communication “EduBiota: microbiome literacy and One Health to communicate sustainability”, presented as a contribution to reflecting on the role of microbiology and microbiomes in the communication of contemporary scientific and social issues.
The communication highlighted the importance of making microbiology more visible, understandable and closer to different audiences, especially in a context where microorganisms are still often associated only with risk, disease or threat. Based on an approach grounded in microbiomes, One Health and sustainability, EduBiota was presented as a platform and programme supporting education and communication in microbiology, with particular attention to young people, teachers and formal and non-formal educational contexts.
During the presentation, EduBiota’s main lines of action were shared: the development of digital resources, scientific mediation, teacher professional development and EduBiotaLab, as an initiative that brings together microbiology, schools and experimental practice. The need to communicate microbiology responsibly was also emphasised, avoiding excessive simplification and alarmism, and promoting a more balanced understanding of the relationship between microorganisms, health, the environment and society.
Participation in the SciCom 26 Congress also provided an opportunity to discuss a central question for the project: how can specialised knowledge about microbiomes be transformed into cultural and educational mediation for sustainability?
Between sessions, meetings and conversations, Évora also offered a particularly inspiring setting in which to think about science as heritage for the future — in a dialogue between knowledge, education, culture and place.
For EduBiota, this presence reinforces its commitment to rigorous, accessible and socially relevant science communication, capable of bringing microbiology closer to today’s challenges and contributing to more critical, informed and participatory scientific literacy.
